How to Use a Spirit Level Correctly

What a spirit level tells you

A spirit level shows whether a surface is perfectly horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). The bubble in the vial sits between the two lines when the surface is true. Simple — but technique matters.

Read the right vial

• Horizontal vial: for checking level (e.g. a shelf).
• Vertical vial: for checking plumb (e.g. a door frame or wall).

The bubble must sit exactly centred between the two marks.

Place it flat and steady

Rest the level fully flat against the surface, with no gaps or debris underneath. Even a small bit of dust or an uneven spot throws off the reading.

Check by reversing it

To confirm both the surface and the level itself are accurate, take a reading, then flip the level end-for-end and read again. If the bubble reads the same both ways, you can trust it. If not, the level may be off.

Use the right length

A longer level gives more accurate readings over a long surface; a short (torpedo) level fits tight spots. For big jobs like fitting a long shelf, use a longer level or check at multiple points.

For hanging things straight

Hold the item against the wall, place the level on top (for level) or along the side (for plumb), adjust until the bubble centres, then mark your fixing points. No more crooked frames.
